Long Island is known for its rich maritime history. This year celebrate American independence July 4-7 when the Tall Ships Festival comes to Greenport, Long Island, bringing it with it the replica of the Hermione- the French frigate used by the Marquis de Lafayette to travel to America in support of the American Revolution. A half-dozen tall ships will be available for tours beginning July 4; the Hermione will be anchored July 6 and 7.

Daylight savings is over, but with the holiday season comes the perfect counter to an early night: The sparkling of holiday lights! Here on Long Island it seems like every village has some unique way of celebrating the coming of winter and its holidays, with tree lightings, house tours, light arrangements, festivals and fairs. Holiday events began as early as the first week in December with one of Long Island’s favorite mascots, the Big Duck in Flanders, being given a coat of lights and some decor to match, the opening of the Jones Beach Holiday Light Extravaganza, and more.
