If your household is anything like mine, everybody has gathered together to celebrate the holidays; distant relatives have flown in, days off of work have been secured and, depending on the school district, the kids are sitting on nearly two weeks of vacation time.  Luckily, as we observed in our last post, Long Island has no shortage of holiday celebrations, so here are a few upcoming events to keep those youths entertained.

Daylight savings is over, but with the holiday season comes the perfect counter to an early night: The sparkling of holiday lights! Here on Long Island it seems like every village has some unique way of celebrating the coming of winter and its holidays, with tree lightings, house tours, light arrangements, festivals and fairs. Holiday events began as early as the first week in December with one of Long Island’s favorite mascots, the Big Duck in Flanders, being given a coat of lights and some decor to match, the opening of the Jones Beach Holiday Light Extravaganza, and more.

The 2014 Snap and Win Photo Contest

At the beginning of the month the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau & Sports Commission’s (LICVB&SC) wrapped up its annual Snap and Win photo contest.  This is the Bureau’s second year holding the contest.  Throughout September photographers were given an opportunity to submit their favorite works portraying the things they love about Long Island, resulting in over a thousand submissions.  Among the contenders were beautiful shots of Long Island’s beaches, parks, historic structures, local events and more, but in the end only a handful of these works of art would be declared winners.

Redbook Names Long Island A Top Wine Region

In just 40 years it’s amazing to see how much the North Fork region of Long Island has evolved from a primarily potato farming region to a world-class wine producing region. Apparently the climate and soil conditions are just right for growing grapes here (who knew?). There’s been some great recognition of the region lately; in fact Redbook just named it one of the Top Ten Wine Regions in America. Redbook is a pretty prestigious, 110 year old magazine  owned by Hearst publications and has a total circulation of over two million.
